Inflation continues to climb

Higher costs of food, transport & communication and housing continued to stoke inflation in April.

The Department of Statistics says when compared to April last year, the consumer price index rose 7.5 percent.

Food prices advanced by 8.5 per cent on account of dearer cooked food, milk products, vegetables, seafood, bread, fresh poultry and fruits.

Costs of transport & communication rose by 7 per cent as a result of dearer petrol, as well as higher taxi fares and car prices.

Higher accommodation costs and electricity tariffs raised the housing cost by 11.8 per cent.

The consumer price index for the first four months of 2008 was 6.9 per cent higher compared with the same period of previous year.
