Room with a view: $1,000

Room with a view: $1,000

WANT to catch this year’s National Day Parade and fireworks while sipping champagne in the comfort of a hotel room?

Well, be prepared to pay three times more for a room that faces Marina Bay, which will host Singapore’s 43rd birthday bash, than one that does not.

Hotels that provide front-row seats to the parade are raising prices and still doing a roaring business in the run-up to the Aug 9 extravaganza.

The 608-room Ritz-Carlton, for instance, expects full occupancy come the big day. This, despite National Day packages that will set guests back between $900 and $1,100 per night. Rooms without a view of the fireworks and parade go for $290.

The Mandarin Oriental is singing a similar tune. Roughly 170 of the rooms that provide views of both the floating platform and the fireworks have been booked. Rates for the parade-view rooms start from $780 a night, compared to $329 a night for ‘normal’ ones.

The steep prices are not a deterrence to diehard parade fans like 58-year-old Mr Jasni Jamil, who has set aside a cool $1,000 for a room and extras.

‘For National Day, it’s not about the money but the value of the event itself, as it’s when we come together to celebrate our country’s independence,’ he said.

National Day celebrations have spread to the heartland. About 1,300 people are expected to turn up for the Toa Payoh Central Community Club’s dinner and award ceremony for grassroots leaders on Aug 3. Meanwhile, 1,000 residents from the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Bukit Panjang ward will feast decked out in their best 60s and 70s retro gear.

Underprivileged or troubled youth will not be forgotten either.

Twenty volunteers from the Tanjong Pagar Community Club Youth Group will tour the Botanic Gardens and Night Safari with 60 youth from low-income families during the evening of Aug 30.
